In early 2019, the Cincinnati Rollergirls came to us with the asks of creating them a poster which would not only showcase their match dates for the 2019 season, but also act as their “brand” for this season. Each season, the Rollergirls utilize different assets under the same theme of being powerful, reigning women. These poster assets were utilized in newspaper ads, match programs, and merch collateral.

PROCESS: INITIAL IDEATION

At first, my iterations acted more as nods to past year’s styles. I was interested in exploring a stark back background with the only color coming through with the crown icon, but the poster iterations lacked the energy and grit that the Roller Girls represent.

PROCESS: SECONDARY IDEATION

After some discussion with my team, I infused as much energy as I visually could into some new iterations (including a nod to Josef Müller-Brockman). The client ended up going for the torn paper/collaged look and feel, which went in the more tough and gritty direction. I wanted to play with the ripped paper layering in a way that looked like information was getting revealed with each new torn layer.

FINAL DELIVERABLES

In addition to the poster as a final piece, I also created a half page ad for a local newspaper using the same assets. The image to the right is after spotting my work in the wild for the first time!
